Mass Readings: Isaiah 58:9b-14/ Luke 5:27-32

The Wise Women

Typically, today’s first reading’s talking about “satisfying the afflicted” would have had me thinking about ways I could help others. Over this past year though, I’ve been on the receiving end.

Both a cousin and a long-time friend — whom I’ve come to refer to as “The Wise Woman of Dubuque” and “The Wise Woman of Everett” — have been especially helpful during my first year of widowerhood. One lost her husband eight years ago. For the other, it’s been almost 11. Both are younger than I am. They are, in the words of the first reading, “repairers” and “restorers.” Not making my life as it had once been, but helping me adjust to, and live with, as it is now.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for those who bless my life in so many ways.
