Mass Readings: Deuteronomy 30:15-20/Luke 9:22-25
It’s no secret that big companies tend to keep mum about a CEO or founder — and especially a CEO-founder — who has developed serious health issues. If the word gets out it’s bad for staff morale and potentially devastating to stock prices. In today’s Gospel the CEO-founder of the Church lets those early disciples know He’s going to suffer, be rejected and be killed. And, He goes on, as followers they’re supposed to deny themselves, take up their crosses daily, and lose their lives for His sake. Who would want to work at, or invest in, that company?
But, of course, the Church isn’t part of a company. It belongs to a kingdom. And the King never lied about what it means, and what it takes, to be a part of it.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, give me courage.
