Mass Readings: 1 Peter 1:10-16/Mark 10:28-31
I’m sure that over the years God has heard me offer Him a lot of variations of Peter’s comment in today’s Gospel: “We have given up everything to follow you.” No, I never gave up everything but, yes — at times, it seemed to me — I did . . . something . . . for God. A small something, certainly, but still. Where was the payoff for me? Why wasn’t I (immediately!) richly rewarded in one way or another “in this present age”? One hundred times over!
The answer is in the second half of the Gospel. Yes, countless blessings will come, but they’ll come “with persecutions.” When I limit my focus to heartaches and hardships, things we all face, I overlook how richly God has rewarded me. And how much He loves me: infinitely.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the countless blessings You give me every day.
