Editor's Notebook — Dec. 2 Happy Advent! I hope you all had a joyous, blessed, and thanks-filled holiday last week.

To get your season of waiting off to a good start, here are some tips on how to slow down and savor the next 23 days.

In the news this morning:

Pope Francis at his Sunday Angelus yesterday said that Advent, marking the start of a new liturgical year, renews "the horizon of hope" where a peaceful world is concerned.

There's much to be said on Pope Francis' first apostolic exhortation released last week, and we will have plenty of content in next week's issue. But for now, Catholic News Service gives a good overview of what the pope included — and what he left out. Religion News Service writes on Pope Francis versus the free marketeers.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan spoke on Meet the Press that aired yesterday, and focused on the Affordable Care Act, same-sex marriage and giving thanks (link includes video and print summary).

Another video, this one from Fox News, looks at how Pope Francis is reenergizing the Church.

While today marks the first day same-sex marriage is legal in Hawaii, Croatian voters approved Sunday a referendum defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

In Mexico, bishops are taking on the drug cartels.

Catholics on Staten Island in New York soon might be in for some big changes.

Finally, for laughs, here is Religion News Services' holiday gift guide.

Have a great day!
