I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. — Psalm 23:6cd
Mass Readings: Isaiah 25:6-10a/Matthew 15:29-37
How can we describe the infinitely abundant goodness of God? Words fail us. Imagination itself peters out. Still, Scripture offers some suggestions. In today’s first reading, Isaiah speaks of God providing “a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.” The Gospel tells of how Jesus fulfills this promise, multiplying seven loaves and a few fish to feed His followers so that all were satisfied.
We feel, each one of us, a need, an ache, a hunger in our hearts. It is not a hunger that any amount of bread or fish (or choice wines) can satisfy. Our hunger is for Christ himself. Today’s scriptural images are meant to tell us that only in Him will we find the deepest desire of our hearts fulfilled.
Prayer: Jesus, let me find my heart’s desire in You.
