November 30, St. Andrew, Apostle

The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just. — Psalm 19:10

Mass Readings: Romans 10:9-18/Matthew 4:18-22

Families of the Fishermen

Today’s Gospel tells us how four contented fishermen suddenly became apostles. Andrew and his brother, Simon, were fishing. Zebedee and his sons, James and John, were mending nets. Out of the blue, Jesus approached. He called Andrew and Simon, and then James and John. Instantly, they “left their nets and followed him.” These men left their lives as fishermen. It’s likely that they also left wives, children, friends, mothers and fathers. What did Zebedee feel when his sons walked off with Jesus? Heart broken? Angry?

Even today, Church ministry can be hard on ministry families. I once struggled with my husband’s job as youth ministry director for our parish. Those long hours were often hard on me and our two children. Later, I saw how his work blessed many youth and our family, too.

Prayer: Jesus, help us to encourage others to follow You — even when it’s painful for us all.
