In you, O Lord, I have found my peace — Psalm 131
Mass Readings: Philippians 2:1-4/Luke 14:12-14
In my parish on the Fridays of Lent, we have wonderful soup suppers with a delicious array of soups and breads. A “freewill offering” is requested for charities, but the supper is free to anyone who wants to come. Typically, however, it’s the same core group of parishioners who attend suppers for the fellowship and great soup.
At a parish prayer group meeting during Lent, Lorraine suggested the kind of change in approach that Jesus promotes in today’s Gospel. “We should hand out soup supper coupons to needy people who come to our food pantry,” she said. She also suggested that parishioners reach beyond a comfort zone to offer hospitality and transportation to the meal. Lorraine’s idea struck a chord. Shouldn’t we constantly look for ways to give to those who can’t give back?
Prayer: Lord, teach me to be genuinely generous, selfless, and completely unconcerned about being paid back.
