The Lord speaks of peace to his people. — Psalm 85 (see 9)
Mass Readings: Ephesians 2:12-22 / Luke 12:35-38
A priest once said, “Yes, Jesus is your friend, but He is much more than that. He is the Lord of heaven and earth.” Today’s Gospel brings that dynamic into focus. If Jesus is only my buddy, I may be tempted to abuse the relationship like I sometimes do with my friends. If Jesus returned home late, expecting to be served and I failed to do so, I might say, “But we’re pals, so we’re cool, right?”
However, Jesus makes it clear in the Gospel that a lack of respectful vigilance results in a lack of blessing. Ideally, I combine my intimate friendship with Jesus with the allegiance due to Him as my Lord. The result is a devotion that motivates me to both be with my dear friend and serve my Master.
Prayer: Lord and Friend, grant me a true devotion to You.
