The Lord remembers his covenant for ever. — Psalm 105:8a
Mass Readings: Galatians 3:22-29 / Luke 11:27-28
My aunt is a huge genealogy buff, and when she tells me about all the royalty, and even saints, that comprise my family tree, I feel special simply by the fact that we have a common lineage. I think the woman who blesses Jesus’ mother, Mary, in today’s Gospel is trying to point to that special honor that comes from being blood relatives with an exemplary person.
Jesus’ response bypasses the flesh-and-blood notoriety due to Mary and rather points to her deeper virtue. He focuses on the spiritual dimension, which relates Mary to Him by virtue of her obedience to God. In a sense, she receives double honor. As for me, I hear Jesus say, “You’re related to saints? Great! But are you acting like them?”
Prayer: Faithful Lord, may I be bound to You in love.
