September 27, St. Vincent de Paul

In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. — Psalm 90:1

Mass Readings: Ecclesiastes 1:2-11 / Luke 9:7-9

Devotion to the Poor

Born in France in 1580, Vincent de Paul’s biography reads like an action movie: went on secret missions for the king; captured by Turkish pirates; escaped slavery; became friend to convicts in the galleys. But no experience meant more to Vincent than his duties as a priest, specially his devotion to the poor and needy. Everywhere he ministered, Vincent founded a conference of charity for the relief of the poor.

Vincent continues to inspire lay Catholics today who carry on his works of charity at the parish level through the society named for him. What makes this organization different from other charities is the gift of presence. Its lay volunteers visit the people who need assistance in their home, offering help, hope, encouragement, and above all, friendship.

Prayer: St. Vincent de Paul, help me to see how I can make a difference today.
