September 23, Twenty-Fifth Sunday

The Lord upholds my life. — Psalm 54:6b

Mass Readings: Wisdom 2:12,17-20 / James 3:16–4:3 / Mark 9:30-37

New Eyes

I’ve already learned so much from my first grandchild, and she’s only 15 months old! When I’m with her, I lose myself into her world of wonder, discovery, awe and joy — so much joy! Being in “Elena time” is a gift in living life to the fullest by being truly present. When I’m in her moment, nothing else matters. And when I leave her, I feel like I’ve been on retreat — renewed in spirit, and able to see God in everything.

I think this is what Jesus meant when He said, “whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.” To receive a child, one must be truly present to that little person, to enter her world, and see with her eyes. It’s the gift of living the present moment.

Prayer: Lord, help me to receive what You give me today with a joyful heart.
