Proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes again. — 1 Corinthians 11:26b
Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 11:17-26,33 / Luke 7:1-10
On my visit to the site of Our Lady’s apparition in Fatima, Portugal, I was struck by Mary’s passionate request that we pray for those who have no one to pray for them. I had never thought about it. I regularly pray for my family and friends, noting special requests or needs as I bring their petitions to prayer. But what about the thousands of people around me no one remembers?
In today’s Gospel, the centurion at Capernaum interceded on behalf of his servant. In spite of his higher worldly ranking, the soldier humbly approached Jesus, recognizing Jesus’ authority and emphasizing his own unworthiness. Like the centurion, I can also bring to Jesus the needs of others who have no one to speak for them, especially those who are alone and forgotten.
Prayer: My Lord, I am not worthy, but I know Your mercy is everlasting.
