August 19, Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. — Psalm 34:9

Mass Readings: Proverbs 9:1-6 / Ephesians 5:15-20 /John 6:51-58

Real Presence

The God who created the universe comes before us under the appearance of bread and wine to be adored, worshiped, and consumed. Jesus teaches us this truth in today’s Gospel. It took great faith for the people of Jesus’ time to believe that this man raised by a carpenter named Joseph was also the Son of the living God. It takes great faith now to believe that the bread and wine at Mass are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

We believe these things but not because our senses tell us that they’re true. We believe because we trust the Person who reveals them. Jesus Himself tells us about His identity as the Son of the Father. Jesus himself tells us to eat His Flesh and Blood.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for always being with us in the Eucharist.
