You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die. — Psalm 38:(see 17)
Mass Readings: Isaiah 38:1-6,21-22,7-8 / Matthew 12:1-8
Today’s first reading is about a man who’s been told he’s going to die soon. He turns his face to the wall, prays and weeps bitterly. Been there. Done that. I suspect all of us who have heard serious and frightening news from a doctor have.
The reading goes on to say God assures the man “I will add fifteen years to your life.” Fifteen years is huge if you’re thinking in terms of months or weeks but still . . . there is a limit. I suspect those of us who have experienced this have another common trait: We remember that time and, despite assurances, we wonder if we will have to face that particular challenge again. And what the outcome will be. We also know how precious life is.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, give courage and comfort to all those who will receive a serious medical diagnosis today.
