The Lord has chosen Zion for his dwelling. — Psalm 132:13
Mass readings: 2 Kings 11:1-4,9-18,20 / Matthew 6:19-23
My friend Father David Knight, a writer, keeps challenging me and all who read his books. He says that before making any serious decision in our lives — like buying a car, running for office, changing jobs, etc., etc. — we should ask ourselves: Will what I choose to do serve Christ at least in my own understanding of what I believe Christ wants of me?
The notion of “storing up treasures on earth” always comes to my mind — referred to in today’s Gospel. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be,” says Jesus. This is of course what God cares about — our hearts. God wants us to respect Him, yes indeed, but He wants us to love Him — and our neighbor as ourselves.
Prayer: Maker of all that is good, help us look into our hearts and evaluate what our most driving desires are.
