June 13, St. Anthony of Padua

Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. — Psalm 16:1

Mass readings: 1 Kings 18:20-39 / Matthew 5:17-19

Never Disappointed

I have a sister who’s a nun. The invitation to her day of final vows boldly stated: “Has anyone trusted in the Lord and been disappointed?”(Sir 2:10). This, in practice, has been her creed through many years of faithful service. I would use a similar quote about St. Anthony, whom we honor today. In my memory, I’ve never prayed to St. Anthony to help me find a lost object and not found it. I say, “in my memory.” My point is that I don’t remember St. Anthony ever failing. To me that means that if I didn’t find the object, it must not have been all that important.

God, indeed, shows us this same, generous favor each day — never disappointing us in finding what we truly need.

Prayer: Thank You, God, for Your faithfulness to me. Teach me to keep trusting You.
