May 31, Visitation of the Blessed Virgin

Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.— Isaiah 12:6

Mass readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18 or Romans 12:9-16 / Luke 1:39-56

Woman of Love

Unlike the major Marian holy days of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption — which celebrate rightful privileges that set Mary apart from us — today’s feast of the Visitation of Our Lady allows the humanity of this courageous woman of faith and love to shine forth. Mary, who has given her trembling “yes” to God’s challenging call, practically runs to help her cousin Elizabeth, bringing the new life of Jesus growing within her.

At definite moments of my life I’ve given God my trembling “yes,” but sometimes my trust falls short. How I want to be more like Mary! Each of us is called to bring the Jesus Who lives within us to others by extending ourselves in love. By living our “yes.”

Prayer: Mary, help us to bring Jesus to others, especially those who need Him most.
