Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth. — Psalm 68:33

Mass readings: Acts 20:17-27 / John 17:1-11

“Our Mission”

From our perspective, Jesus’ mission (life, death, and resurrection) and Paul’s mission (apostle to the Gentiles) — missions they placed above life itself — seem so clear, while our mission from God may seem less obvious; or our circumstances, fears or inadequacies seemingly hamper its accomplishment. I’ve found that when I’m open and cooperate with His grace, God helps me accomplish my mission of communicating His love, sometimes in small or unexpected ways (e.g., smiles, Band-Aids, Facebook). The words on a cherished coffee mug keep me on course: “Lord, guide me to do what I can, where I am, with what I have.”

St. Rita of Cascia (d. 1457) practiced these words, cooperating with God’s grace while enduring a difficult marriage. Finally, as a widow she persevered and accomplished her mission of prayer, healing, and counseling as an Augustinian nun.

Prayer: Lord, help us cooperate with Your grace and accomplish our mission in all circumstances.
