May 10, St. Damien of Molokai

Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations. — Psalm 96:3

Mass readings: Acts 15:7-21 / John 15:9-11

Joy, Not Burden

Today’s reading from Acts continues the account of the Council of Jerusalem and reveals the ongoing reconciling work of the Holy Spirit through prayer, testimony, Scripture, silent listening, and Petrine and apostolic authority. Peter’s bold testimony and inspired teaching declare that the Holy Spirit purified the hearts of the Gentiles by faith and that all — Jews and Gentiles alike — are saved by grace. James confirms the call of the Gentiles by God’s Word. All conclude that God does not impose unnecessary burdens.

In today’s Gospel Jesus shows His way is ongoing love flowing from the Father to and through Him to us — a love in which we remain by keeping His commandments, resulting in His complete joy living in us! Today’s saint, Damien of Molokai, demonstrates that dedicated love transforms suffering from burden into joy.

Prayer: Lord, help us move from a “burdens” mindset to focus on Your love and grace.
