May 2, St. Athanasius

O God, let all the nations praise you! — Psalm 67:4

Mass readings: Acts 12:24–13:5 / John 12:44-50

Unsung Heroes

Today’s reading from Acts describes an “unsung hero” named Barnabas who had sought out the newly-converted Saul and brought him into the community (Acts 9:27). It seemed Barnabas (whose name means “son of encouragement”) was taking a risk because Saul had recently persecuted the Church. But, as you know, Saul became the great apostle, Paul, author of much of the New Testament.

How many “unsung heroes” have come into our lives, believing in us and encouraging us when we didn’t even believe in ourselves! In my life, especially in my friendships and in my role as teacher of preschoolers with special needs, I long to be an encourager and help others achieve their God-given potential! Today let us gratefully recall and follow the example of each “Barnabas” in our lives.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of encouragement. Help us to encourage others.
