April 26, Thursday Easter Weekday

Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. — Psalm 66:1

Mass readings: Acts 8:26-40 / John 6:44-51

Bread of Life

I love basketball. I watch it and read about it. I remember a magazine profile of Pete Carril, then a coach at Princeton. His players loved him for his honesty and integrity. Unlike some other coaches, he wasn’t slick. He was candid and reflective. He knew that even his greatest victories ran a little hollow. He told the writer that even in the midst of a raucous locker room after his team won a great victory he felt a small letdown. He knew the moment wouldn’t last. Perhaps it was morbid, but he was aware that death might come tomorrow.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us He’s the living bread. Things of this earth wither and perish but God is eternal. We need to keep our eyes fixed on heaven.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I fixate on things of the earth.
