April 24, St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. — Psalm 31:6

Mass readings: Acts 7:51–8:1 / John 6:30-35

Advocate for God

Born in 1577 in Germany, Mark Rey became a wealthy and successful lawyer but grew disgusted by the greed and corruption of his peers. His heart was with God. He gave away his wealth, became a Franciscan priest (changing his name to Fidelis) and preached to Calvinists in Switzerland. He prayed for two things: that he never fall into mortal sin and that he die for the faith. In 1622, after refusing to renounce his faith, a mob killed him outside a church.

The feast of St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen is a reminder of our calling to serve God, even if it becomes uncomfortable. We may never be in a position where our commitment to our faith puts our life in jeopardy, but God asks us to live our faith day after day.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I take the easy way out and fail to do what is right.
