April 23, Monday Easter Weekday

Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! — Psalm 119:1

Mass readings: Acts 6:8-15 / John 6:22-29

Hair and Now

Working out on a stationary bike at the gym the other day, I watched an infomercial on a shampoo. The spokesperson for the product gushed about it. It was spectacular. It was miraculous. People needed to buy this because, she concluded, “you know that a bad hair day is a bad day.” Yep, we need to look good and feel good for our life to have value. That’s the message we get from advertisers. Life is about fulfilling our needs. Happiness lies in stocking our shopping cart with the right products.

In today’s Gospel Jesus talks about the food that endures for eternal life. Only when we seek God do we become ourselves and find fulfillment. Life isn’t about accumulating the right kind of goods but about satisfying our longing for our good God.

Prayer: Lord, give me the grace to cut through the clutter of life and focus on You.
