April 13, Friday within the Octave of Easter

The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. — Psalm 118:22

Mass readings: Acts 4:1-12 / John 21:1-14

God’s Abundance

I’m sure there’s a historical or sociological reason why family and friends gather together for a meal after a funeral. But whatever the origin, the tradition works. After all the sadness, tears, and reflection, it feels right to break bread with those who also loved and cherished the person now with the Lord. The occasion isn’t exactly a celebration but an acknowledgement of the preciousness of life and relationships. Now more than ever we know we need one another and we need God.

In today’s Gospel, shortly after His death and resurrection Jesus tells the disciples to cast their nets and they catch a huge amount of fish. Jesus conquered death. He brought us abundance. We may suffer in many ways, including losing a loved one, but God is the ultimate reality.

Prayer: Lord, let me always remember that Your love is the defining part of life.
