April 7, Holy Saturday

Create a clean heart in me, O God. — Psalm 51:12

Mass Readings: Vigil: Genesis 1:1–2:2 or 1:1,26‑31/ Genesis 22:1‑18 or 22:1‑2,9,10‑13,15‑18 / Exodus 14:15–15:1 / Isaiah 54:5‑14 / Isaiah 55:1‑11 / Baruch 3:9‑15,32–4:4 / Ezekiel 36:16-17,18‑28 / Romans 6:3‑11 / Mark 16:1-7

The Central Event

I’m skeptical of people who write books about seeing angels or experiencing divine intervention. I believe these things can happen. But I wonder if these authors are too quick to conclude heavenly intervention when a more commonplace explanation is more likely. Yet there I was a few years ago at the bedside of my seriously ill sister. She was just 23 and had suffered a brain seizure. She was in surgery for 18 hours and the doctors weren’t sure if she would live. I swear for just an instant I saw — faint and indistinct — Jesus on one side of the bed and Mary on the other. She lived.

We can never understand the Resurrection. It defies all explanation. But we believe it happened. And because of it our lives are entirely transformed.

Prayer: Lord, let me worship and praise You and keep You at the center of my life.
