My mother grew up in a household with rancor and sorrow. More than anything, she wanted a family that was happy. She bore seven kids in 10 years and she worked tirelessly at providing a clean, safe, loving home. She rose at 4 in the morning to do laundry. She packed our school lunches, folded our hundreds of newspapers for our paper routes, helped us with our homework, drove us to the doctor and dentist, wiped our noses, dried our tears, and nursed us through countless bruises and bumps—both physical and emotional. Deeply religious, my mom lived her faith daily and hourly.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. He demonstrated His love through attentive and devoted service. He showed us that love isn’t an abstract concept but rooted in selfless behavior.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for modeling a life of love.
