The Lord remembers his covenant for ever. — Psalm 105:8
Mass readings: Genesis 17:3-9 / John 8:51-59
I complained to my spiritual director that I was growing impatient with God. “I’m ready for my next big challenge,” I whined. “I keep asking God to show me my next big project. Telling Him that any time now, I’m ready for a huge task.” She looked at me with gentle and unspoken reproach: “That’s not what God wants to hear from you,” she said. “God wants to hear your prayers of thanksgiving for everything you already have.” She suggested I read blessings aloud in my house, to remind me of God’s bounty.
In her gentle way, she made me realize I’m like the people in today’s Gospel passage, throwing stones at the Lord of the Universe because He’s not behaving the way I’d like him to. I don’t want to throw stones at Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, forgive my impatience and my narrow vision.
