Glory and praise for ever! — Daniel 3:52

Mass readings: Daniel 3:14-20,91-92,95 / John 8:31-42

Jesus’ Eyelashes

During a long-ago retreat, an unconventional prayer exercise startled me into a keen awareness of the Incarnation. The retreat director suggested that we stand close to some statue or icon in the retreat center. Late one night, I walked up to a life-sized crucifix and stared straight into the face of Jesus. He had eyelashes. I cannot tell you what a profound effect those eyelashes had on me. He seemed so real, so human.

I think of that humanness as He almost pleads with His audience in today’s Gospel. Why are they trying to kill Him? Why don’t they believe Him? He seems so baffled and hurt. All He wants to do is love them, love us. And our very human Lord suffers because no one seems to understand.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to appreciate Your humanity.
