The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. — Psalm 34:19
Mass readings: Wisdom 2:1,12-22 / John 7:1-2,10,25-30
A retreat director tells The Tale of the Noisy Radiator. As she was leading a silent retreat an old, steam radiator started to make a grinding and ticking noise and persisted throughout the guided meditation. When the retreatants broke for lunch a member of one group was irate. “Did you hear that old man next to us?” the person whined. “He was grinding his teeth and clicking his dentures. How rude.” Another retreatant, at another table, commented, “Did anyone hear the comforting sounds of that old radiator? I felt so accompanied as we prayed.”
We see events and people through our own filter, which makes it vital that our filter is God’s. In today’s reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear “they erred; for their wickedness blinded them.” Our vision can be clouded, too.
Prayer: Lord of Divine, help me to see with your eyes.
