Remember the marvels the Lord has done. — Psalm 105:5
Mass readings: Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28 / Matthew 21:33-43,45-46
Gratitude comes readily for me. The personalized license plate on my car says, “grazie.” I readily thank God for all the good things He’s bestowed on me. I sometimes think I’ll have the words Thank You engraved on my tombstone. Can you tell I’m almost sinfully proud of how grateful I am?
And then I read today’s Gospel. And I remember all the ways in which I turn away from God’s gifts. All the ways in which I don’t truly appreciate the enormous gift of love God bestows on me every day. I feel as if I’m the tenants scorning the landlord’s servants. Today’s Gospel acts as a searchlight into my soul, shedding light on all those places where I withhold gratitude; shedding light on the ways I need to grow in thanksgiving.
Prayer: Bountiful Lord, help me grow in gratitude.
