Lord, teach me your statutes. — Psalm 119:12
Mass Readings: 1 Kings 3:4-13 / Mark 6:30-34
We’ve all heard the proverbial story of the genie in the bottle. A castaway finds a bottle and from it out pops a magical being who will grant the individual one wish. If you found yourself in such a position, what would be your request? In essence, God gave Solomon the same opportunity. Rather than seeking personal fortune, fame or longevity, Solomon’s request for wisdom was essentially a request for his people. He sought the ability to govern wisely and in the end gained all personal things as well.
We must have the confidence of Solomon in approaching God. If we seek those things which help the common good, then the needs and desires of our personal life will also be granted. God’s promise is a sure thing.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to place my hope, trust, and confidence in You.
