December 28, The Holy Innocents

Our soul has been rescued like a bird from the fowler’s snare. — Psalm 124:7

Mass Readings: 1 John 1:5-2:2 / Matthew 2:13-18

Today’s Holy Innocents

Our family supports and participates in 40 Days for Life. It’s somehow both tragic and fitting that the very first martyrs for Jesus Christ should be babies. The devil hates children with a particular malice precisely because God loves them with a special love. I always find great hope in the fact that the Holy Innocents, unbaptized all, are saints of the Church, killed because of the devil’s hatred of children. I think the victims of our culture of abortion are likewise being killed because of Jesus and His Gospel. So I always pray that God our Father will receive them as He received the babes of Bethlehem.

“Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you” (Is 49:15).

Prayer: Holy Innocents, pray that we may love all children with Christ’s love.
