December 14,  St. John of the Cross

Let the clouds rain down the Just One, and the earth bring forth a Savior. — Isaiah 45:8

Mass Readings: Isaiah 45:6-8,18,21-25 / Luke 7:18-23

Judged by Love

St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) says, “At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.” If you’re like me, it’s easy to forget that, and start thinking you will be judged on how smart you are, or what you accomplished in your career, or how much stuff you acquired, or how much theology you learned, or how many arguments you won, or 50 million other ways you proved that God owed you salvation because you are That Sort of Person.

St. John takes us straight back to the basics. Jesus offers us love and challenges us to take it and then give it away to the next person we meet. If we love, then we are living in His love.

Prayer: St. John, pray that I may live in God’s love and give it away.
