The Lord our God comes with power. — Isaiah 40:10
Mass Readings: Isaiah 40:1-11 / Matthew 18:12-14
When Groucho Marx tells Chico Marx that the contract between them has a Sanity Clause, Chico scoffs, “You can’t fool me. There ain’t no Sanity Claus.” I love that gag. And I love that Chico is wrong. “Santa Claus” is just a corruption of “Saint Nicholas” and he is quite real indeed. In the fourth century he was the bishop of Myra and was famous for giving gifts to the desperately poor members of his flock. He once provided a dowry to a young woman to save her from a life of prostitution.
What is beautiful about our Faith is that we can say there is, not was, a Santa Claus because St. Nicholas still lives. He has eternal life by the power of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection. Happy Feast of Santa Claus!
Prayer: St. Nicholas, pray for us that we may have a generous heart like yours.
