November 30, St. Andrew

The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just. — Psalm 19:8

Mass Readings: Romans 10:9-18 / Matthew 4:18-22

And the Other One

Andrew would make a good patron saint for all who stand in the shadow of a brother or sister. (“Sure Andrew is an apostle but . . . he’s no Peter.”) At times in our lives, each of us is “the other one.” Second fiddle. Not center stage. Not in the limelight. Still . . . .

Jesus chose Andrew and he answered that call. He lived out that vocation to the point of dying for Christ. In the same way, Jesus has called each of us. Not to be stars, but to do what He asks us to do. And, sometimes, that’s play second fiddle. It’s ego, it’s pride, that hisses, “That’s not good enough!” It’s wisdom, it’s grace, that answers, “It doesn’t get any better than this! I have the opportunity to do what Jesus has asked me to do.”

Prayer: Dear St. Andrew, please pray for all of us who aren’t stars.
