October 21, Friday Weekday

Lord, teach me your statutes. — Psalm 119:68

Mass readings: Romans 7:18-25 / Luke 12:54-59

Perfectly Available Truth

You may have read about a doomsday cult touring the country, predicting a massive earthquake on May 21 and the end of the world on October 21, today. The dates were determined by applying a complex set of mathematical equations to certain numbers in the Bible.

Fortunately, God doesn’t hide the truth about salvation. The great, central truth God wants us to know and practice is not buried in a code that’s finally been cracked after thousands of years. It’s right out in the open: Love the Lord God with all your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. It’s easy to scoff at doomsday prophets and cults, but I’m sure God would prefer that we pray for them — and remember that, while the world may have several billion years left, we don’t.

Prayer: Loving God, I ask for the grace to use my time well.
