October 14, Friday Weekday

I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. — Psalm 32:(see 7)

Mass readings: Romans 4:1-8 / Luke 12:1-7

TGIF?

TGIF: Thank God It’s Friday. Both the acronym and the full version have entered our national vocabulary. The sentiment is based on the premise that the work week has been exhausting and irritating but just when we feel we can’t handle any more work, along comes Friday to usher in a weekend of freedom from the job.

But it’s an illusion for most of us. Most workers don’t get a weekend of freedom. I can attest that teachers and writers don’t. Neither do healthcare workers, fire fighters, police officers, priests, nuns, parents, and countless others. In a sad irony, other countless thousands would love to work on weekends — if they could find work. It would be good to remember all the above in prayer today.

Prayer: O God, help me see my work as You want me to see it.
