October 1, St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus

The Lord listens to the poor. — Psalm 69:34

Mass readings: Baruch 4:5-12,27-29 / Luke 10:17-24

Love: Fuzzies Optional

St. Therese wrote, “Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant, count as nothing.” That’s a good reminder. I’ll run a check on my brilliant deeds, to see if they were done out of love . . . . Well, that didn’t take long. I doubt that I’ve done anything truly . . . wait, yes I did! I invented “Spelling Football”! Nearly everything that can happen in football could happen in “Spelling Football” and (by means impossible to explain here) poorer spellers were not put at a disadvantage.

But was “Spelling Football” conceived in love? I don’t remember making a specific decision to love when I was hammering out the rules. I simply wanted to do a good job on behalf of my eighth-grade students. But I think that amounts to love. Warm fuzzies aren’t necessary.

Prayer: St. Therese, pray for me, that I may act out of love.
