September 17, Saturday Weekday

Come with joy into the presence of the Lord. — Psalm 100:2

Mass readings: 1 Timothy 6:13-16 / Luke 8:4-15

God’s Generosity

Most homilies I hear about today’s Parable of the Sower focus on the soil: What kind am I? Rocky and rootless? Choked by thorns of worry? Or am I good soil? I used to try to fit myself into one of these categories until I realized that on any given day, my life may match each type. Skipping daily prayer leaves me rootless. Violent TV programs choke me with anxiety. Staying close to God creates soil where seeds can flourish.

Meanwhile, the sower apparently isn’t picky about where he’s scattering seed. He’s flinging it everywhere. If the seed in this parable is grace, then God is recklessly generous. He showers us with grace every day, inviting us to be good soil so His seed can “produce fruit a hundredfold.”

Prayer: Loving God, thank You for Your abundant grace. Help me be good soil.
