August 11, St. Clare

Alleluia!

Mass Readings: Joshua 3:7-10,11,13-17 / Matthew 18:21-19:1

Song of St. Clare

There are some souls who reach across the centuries. St. Francis of Assisi is honored not only by Catholics but by those of other faiths and even some of no faith. His spirit of love of man and nature is universal.

St. Clare is a similar soul. When she was 18 years old, she heard Francis preach and immediately sought to abandon the riches of her life and join the poor friars, to live “after the manner of the holy Gospel,” as she said. We may not be able to follow in her way of poverty but we can still respond to the call of St. Clare by nurturing within us a simplicity of heart, and a willingness to offer God everything in the circumstances of our daily lives.

Prayer: Lord, give me a spirit of joy in Your creation and simplicity of heart.
