August 7, Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. — Psalm 85:8

Mass Readings: 1 Kings 19:9,11-13 / Romans 9:1-5 / Matthew 14:22-33

Hearing God’s Voice

Oh, to be Elijah on the mountain! At the time of his death, this fiery prophet was taken to heaven in a flaming chariot (2 Kg 2:11). That’s why some followers of John the Baptist, a fiery preacher, suspected he was Elijah come back to earth.

But today, Elijah learns a lesson about God’s nature that may have surprised him. After defending God’s name before the king, he hid at Horeb, the “mountain of God.” He may have been expecting a divine pat on the back for his bravery and thunderous applause from heaven. But God revealed himself as a “still small voice” or “tiny whispering sound.” For all His power, God is gentle and so, often, we find Him in the silence of our hearts.

Prayer: Father, give me the wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen.
