O God, let all the nations praise you! — Psalm 67:4
Mass Readings: Leviticus 25:1,8-17 / Matthew 14:1-12
In today’s Gospel, because of his oaths and his guests, Herod agrees to the beheading of John the Baptist. What an example of peer pressure! How often we might “go along” in spite of misgivings, rather than slowing down and considering our own principles. I need to remember that some positions demanded by my Christian faith may be unpopular.
Today the Church honors St. Peter Chrysologus (406-450), whose name means “golden-worded.” He’s remembered for many thing, including his short sermons! Before he gave a homily, his prayer would be: “May our God deign to give me the grace of speaking and you the desire of hearing.” I think I need both — the desire to hear the word of God and the grace to speak in faith.
Prayer: Lord, open my heart and mind to better hear Your word.
