Holy is the Lord our God. — Psalm 99:(see 9)
Mass Readings: Exodus 34:29-35 / Matthew 13:44-46
Today’s Gospel talks about people who find something of great value and then figure out how to buy it. I know the feeling! If I’m in a second-hand store and I find an old post card I really want that’s in a whole album of cards I’ll buy the album to get just that one. Even as a child, I’d sort through a huge penny jar looking for the one coin my collection was missing.
But a more careful reading reminds us that Our Lord said more than this. He didn’t just say that what the men found was valuable, but that it was so valuable that they sold all that they had in order to possess it. The Kingdom of Heaven is like that kind of treasure — worth giving up everything else for. It isn’t just something, it’s everything.
Prayer: Lord, help me to seek the treasure of the Kingdom of Heaven.
