July 22, St. Mary Magdalene

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. — Psalm 63:2

Mass Readings: Exodus 20:1-17 / John 20:1-2,11-18

Apostle to Apostles

Mary Magdalene was the first person to see the risen Christ and He instructed her to go to the other disciples and tell them. For that reason the early Church referred to her as “the apostle to the apostles.” There have been many stories about Mary Magdalene, but what is clear is this: she is the only person specifically mentioned in any of the Gospels as present at Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and empty tomb.

One particular legend involving St. Mary Magdalene is the beginning of Easter eggs. It’s said that she attended a banquet held by the Emperor Tiberius. She brought a plain egg and when she proclaimed, “Christ is risen,” the egg turned a vivid red. This started the custom of painting eggs to celebrate the resurrection of the Christ.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me, like Mary Magdalene, celebrate Your resurrection.
