July 4, St. Elizabeth of Portugal

In you, my God, I place my trust. — Psalm 91:(see 2)

Mass Readings: Genesis 28:10-22 / Matthew 9:18-26

An Everyday Christian

St. Elizabeth (1271-1336) was married to Denis, King of Portugal, but their marriage wasn’t a happy one. This mother of two dedicated herself to the poor and the sick as well as being a negotiator between members of her own family and between warring factions. No wonder she’s sometimes known as “St. Elizabeth the Peacemaker”!

What can we learn from St. Elizabeth on our Independence Day? Power doesn’t automatically bring wisdom or peace. And with privilege comes responsibility. Because Elizabeth took her religion seriously, because she applied it in her daily life, the lives of others were bettered as she grew closer to Our Lord.

Prayer: Thank You, Heavenly Father, for our country and for opportunities to help others.
