July 1, The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Lord’s kindness is everlasting to those who fear him.— Psalm 103:(see 17)

Mass Readings: Deuteronomy 7:6-11 / 1 John 4:7-16 / Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus ‘Hearts’ You

These days people use bumper stickers to let the world know how they feel about something. “I heart NY,” for example. Or “I heart K9s.” If you’re a cradle Catholic you’ve probably grown up with images of the Sacred Heart but for converts like me, this devotion was something new. And, of course, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is much, much more than our popular phrases.

The image of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus represents God’s love for all His children. And, as today’s second reading points out, it brings an obligation for each of us: “Beloved, if God so loves us, we also must love one another.” Even those we don’t like. Even those we find so very irritating.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, help me to open my heart to those I meet today.
