June 10, Friday Easter Weekday

The Lord has established his throne in heaven. — Psalm 103:19

Mass readings: Acts 25:13-21 / John 21:15-19

The Recurring Question

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Why three times? I get the sense that Peter wonders that, too; that he’s thinking, “Didn’t you hear me, Lord?” Then I remember all the times Jesus has asked me the same question. Many days, just as He did with Peter, He’s asked it more than once.

He asks it when I’m about to make a decision or spring into action without taking Him into account. Even more, He asks it through the persons around me, the ones I love and the ones I don’t even know, but who need me. And if my answer is yes, what am I to do to prove it? “Feed and tend,” even if that obligation to others takes me where I don’t want to go.

Prayer: Lord, You know that I love You.
