Keep me safe, O Lord; you are my hope. — Psalm 16:1
Mass readings: Acts 22:30;23:6-11 / John 17:20-26
For Jews, today is the second day of Shavuot, a two-day holiday commemorating the day God gave the Torah — the first five books of the Old Testament — to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. Interestingly, in today’s Gospel reading Jesus is also concerned about teachings being handed down, in His case to “those who will believe in me” through hearing the words of His disciples. In both traditions there is an understanding that human beings must be the instruments in handing down God’s teachings and bringing them to fruition in the community.
I’m most a part of my Catholic community when we celebrate the Eucharist together. Today I’m reminding myself to appreciate the special power of community in the prayer my brothers and sisters and I offer each week.
Prayer: Father, please watch over and bless Your children as we worship You together.
