June 2, Ascension of the Lord

God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.— Psalm 47:6

Mass readings: Acts 1:1-11 / Ephesians 1:17-23 /Matthew 28:16-20

Here All Along

What happens to the disciples in today’s readings is something that happens often in our prayer lives, or at least it happens in mine. Jesus goes away. Even though He has said, “I am with you always,” even though He has promised the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it can feel sometimes as if I’m pretty much on my own.

What can I do when I feel abandoned by the Lord, even though faith tells me I’m not? Today Jesus gives His followers the answer: Go, and make disciples of others. Be the face of Jesus to those in spiritual or emotional or material need, to those who truly are abandoned. In your suffering brothers and sisters, you will find the Savior you thought had gone away.

Prayer: Jesus, never let me lose You.
