May 31, Visitation of the Blessed Virgin

Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel. — Isaiah 12:6

Mass readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18 or Romans 12:9-16 / Luke 1:39-56

The Visitation

Imagine Mary scurrying to Judah to visit her cousin Elizabeth: a teenage girl and a woman of advanced years both awed by improbable pregnancies, both bearing boys named by the same archangel — strong, simple names for men who three decades later would change the world. (Yet one wouldn’t feel worthy enough to unlace his cousin’s sandals.) It’s charming to think the two ladies chatted and giggled, sharing mothers’ dreams for their sons. Maybe they exchanged recipes or simple gifts. Indisputably, Mary brought one incredible present: She brought the Son of God.

The challenge of the Visitation is this: Do we do the same? Do we bring Jesus to others? As surely as He resided physically in His mother, He resides spiritually in us. Where are we called to take Him?

Prayer: Mary, Mother of God, let our actions prove we carry Christ with us.
